Preview: Malevo, Peacock Theatre

What an honour to be invited to residence of the Argentine ambassador on Belgrave Square for the UK premiere of South American dance sensation, Malevo. After being treated to a glass (or two) of Malbec from Vistalba of the Mendoza region of Argentina (characterised by subtle hints of ripe cherry and more complex notes of leather, tobacco and black pepper, it was both delicious and moreish), I was suitably primed for this high energy, intricately choreographed, blast of Malambo passion.

Fame, Peacock Theatre

“Fame!” – we all know the infamous song. The lyrics, “I’m gonna live forever, I’m gonna learn how to fly, HIGH” are not well known just because of the original 1980 film, but because of the subsequent television series, film remake and musicals that followed. The title song is a good one by all accounts, however this revival of the 1988 musical serves up little else that’s at its level.

German physical theatre company Teatro Delusio perform a silent comedy accompanied by an array of canonical scores from ballet to opera to a bit of pop. The international show that crosses language barriers through visual tableaus and expressive physicality of character is formed by a series of vignettes starring stock characters. Three performers play stage technicians and alternate to appear as stereotypical theatricals who they encounter backstage. There’s the one who always wants to sit and eat, the one who doesn’t want to be there and the one who’s always flexing his muscles can always be found in a technical team and this trio run the show, set entirely backstage, with haphazard efficiency and human agenda.
