YOU ARE GOING TO DIE, VAULT Festival

by Zahid Fayyaz

This is certainly an eye-opening show that’s a great ending to this year’s festival. The second show from director, writer and actor Adam Scott-Rowley, this follow-up to his critically acclaimed show THIS IS NOT CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT has a lot of buzz around it.

Much like with his last show, the sold-out house is first confronted with Adam naked on the stage. He starts by sitting on a dirty toilet -which gets used as a prop during the performance – and geeing himself up. He then jumps up as soon as the doors close, and launches into one of the many characters in the piece. Essentially a sketch show consisting of different characters but united by pessimism and deep existential issues, he puts on a brave performance front and centre. Different mannerisms and voices are used to convey the different people. At times it’s very funny, and at times terrifying, but it is a tour de force, and one of the most intense performances I’ve seen on stage in a long time.

This is a great show overall. Even if it’s not for everyone, it’s likely to follow its predecessor in touring internationally. This high-impact production one to watch out for the coming months and years.

YOU ARE GOING TO DIE runs through 19 March.
