Sophie Duker: But Daddy I Love Her, Soho Theatre

by Zahid Fayyaz

Former winner of Taskmaster and Celebrity Mastermind, and following regular appearances on Frankie Boyle’s New World Order and The Last Leg, Sophie Duker tours her new show to London this month. This is the sequel to her award-nominated 2019 debut, But Daddy I Loved Her, a play on the trademark phrase from Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, is a loud, brash and electric show from Duker.

Beginning by running through the aisles of the auditorium, the performances gets off to a riotous start. The basis of the show is about Sophie’s ‘daddy issues’, which she conveys through impressively funny gags, impressions, and even a song nearer the end. Covering her therapy sessions with her father, her mother’s holy water obsessions and useless potential sugar daddies, as well as many other topics, the show can be sprawling in scope. There isn’t really a serious side to the show despite the subject matter. Sophie uses her likeability and charisma to keep the show’s momentum going throughout, which helps keep it light. The audience is certainly laughing throughout the show, and the crowd interactions are well-natured and well-received.

After this run, Suker will then be on tour for the rest of the year. It is an extremely entertaining night out, and it is well worth going out of the way to watch.

Sophie Duker: But Daddy I Love Her runs through 19 October.
